Call hitmaker cheesy, but he's 'very rich'

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The title of record producer David Foster's memoir says it all: "Hitman."

David Foster's music has been criticized, but he knows what works. "Pop stands for popular," he says.

Although he's no gun-for-hire (though his critics might argue that he knows how to murder a melody), teaming with Foster can make a hit single an easy target.

Known for his power ballads -- songs that dip and soar to all-out crescendos intended to "make people crazy with emotion" (his words) -- Foster's effect on popular music has been felt not as ripples but as tidal waves.

Foster's work has boosted the wattage of stars like Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Andrea Boccelli and Michael Bublé. He was also the man behind the mixing desk on one of the biggest-selling albums of the last year, Josh Groban's "Noel," and urged Whitney Houston to go for that killer key change in "I Will Always Love You." Watch Foster revel in the music -- and encourage Shanon to sing »

After the election, news as usual?

E-mail Print PDF

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Public Broadcasting Service President and CEO Paula Kerger called Wednesday on news organizations to work to keep Americans engaged in the political process, even though the presidential election has ended.

People watch election results on November 4 at the CNN Election Day viewing party in New York's Times Square.

"What do we do now?" she asked, reprising the line that Robert Redford asked his political consultant at the end of 1972's "The Candidate," after compromising his principles to win an election.

"We should be asking that," Kerger told an audience at a talk sponsored by the Atlanta Press Club.

New approaches in journalism -- especially television journalism -- are needed to keep the interest of the electorate, 133 million of whom voted in last month's elections, from flagging, she said. Unprecedented interest in the election helped whip "the body politic back into shape after years of listlessness," she said.
